At the tender age of 14 I began a journey on a long forked road with
only three exits: death, prison and/or succumb to the perils of the
poison I was selling to the mothers and fathers of my own community. I
escaped one, fell victim to one and dodged one for a period of time until
it eventually caught up to me.

As for the one I escaped, it was the noxious addiction that has and
continues to destroy many families in my community - it even destroyed
my own family.  That was the addiction of substance abuse. As for the
one I fell victim to, it was the prison cell that had been patiently waiting
for me, for fifty thousand years before anything was brought into
existence, by the divine decree of Allah (i.e. Qadr).

As for the one I dodged for a while until it eventually caught up to me, it
was the death of Jahiliyah (i.e. pre-Islamic era) which I experienced, and
the life that was given to me when I embraced the religion of Islam:

"Can he who was dead, to whom We gave life and a light by which he
can walk amongst men, be like him who is in the depths of darkness
from which he can never come out…"
